Type Locality and Naming

The name of Baihuating Formation was given by Zhaobiequan (1994). The Type Locality is in Baihuating of Yueyang City, Hunan. The key section is the Baihuating section in the Zhongcun Village of Yueyang (113º15', 28º05'). The Geological Survey Team used to call it as the Luojiu Formation and referred it to the Upper Cretaceous to Paleocene.


Lithology and Thickness

The formation consists of a group of reddish brown thick-bedded conglomerate, sandy conglomerate, and calcareous siltstone. Its thickness are various from 500 m to 5000 m in different sedimentary basins.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It unconformably contacts with the underlying pre-Cretaceous strata.

Upper contact

Its top is covered by the Paleocene beds.

Regional extent

The formation is distributed in the Xiangtan, Changing, Yueyang and Yuanma basins.
